Between January and May 2008, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon commissioned three very revealing surveys on the subject of smoke-free housing and second-hand smoke. For those considering the implementation of a no-smoking policy, we believe you will find this information very valuable.

About the BC Tenant Survey

Between January and February 2008, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon commissioned BC Stats to conduct a survey of 1,000 British Columbians living in apartments and condominiums about their experiences with second-hand smoke.

We found that over 34 per cent of apartment and condominium dwellers are exposed to unwanted second-hand smoke from their neighbours. Further, we found that the majority of renters would prefer to live in a 100% smoke-free building. Learn more.

About the BC Apartment Owners, Managers and Strata Corporations Survey

Between February 22 and April 16, 2008 the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon commissioned the NRG Research Group to conduct a web survey of apartment owners, managers and strata corporations. The survey objective was to help develop resources to assist property owners and managers to implement smoke-free policies in their buildings.

Of 227 respondents that participated, there was significant recognition of the market demand for smoke-free housing. Eighty two percent of all respondents believe that there is either a ’very big’ or ‘some’ market demand for smoke-free housing. Learn more.

About the BC Non-Profit Housing Sector survey

Between January and May 2008, data was collected for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon as part of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association Asset Analysis project. 192 providers of non-profit housing responded to an extensive survey that included questions regarding smoke-free options and knowledge within the non-profit housing sector. Data collection is still ongoing, and the results presented in this report represent the findings from this preliminary dataset. Learn more
