Download BC Apartment Owner, Manager & Strata Corporation Survey

Between February 22 and April 16, 2008 the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon commissioned the NRG Research Group to conduct a web survey of apartment owners, managers and strata corporations. The survey objective was to help develop resources that property owners and managers can use to adopt smoke-free policies in their buildings. 227 respondents participated.

Survey Highlights

  • There is significant recognition among strata respondents of the strong market demand for smoke-free housing.
  • Nearly nine out of ten strata respondents expect that the issue of smoke-free housing will become more important in the future.
  • 70 per cent of strata corporations receive complaints about second-hand smoke, yet only 25 per cent have a smoke-free bylaw in effect.
  • Three quarters of condo owners live in buildings that do not currently have a smoke-free policy.
Of strata corporations with smoke-free policies, those with the most restrictive smoke-free policies - where smoking is banned in all suites and balconies - appear to provide the most benefits.
